My coursework submission “Student With A DSLR”. A documentary which stretches the definition a little. Click-through the Vimeo link to get more information :)
Fascinated by water drop photography? Me too. There are some clever and well-off people out there that go to great technological lengths to achieve *that* shot.
Not me. Yet.
I’m a student and I like ghetto stuff that I can make myself. This little group is shot using a plate, a milk jug, a sock and the built-in flash on my camera, indoors under tungsten lights.
I think the splashes would have been better-formed if I’d let the drops fall further. Maybe next time!

Lens flare oh my! Found an arcane post-production technique called the Orton Effect. Used here to kind of smoosh out the colours. It’s based on using blurred prints in a slide projector, kind of like Photoshop’s layers but horizontal so it’s easy enough to reproduce digitally.
The original image was very underexposed. I shot in RAW so after correcting lens and chromatic aberration, I made 4 more digital prints to cover a 5EV exposure range and tone-mapped the results.
